Is there a Sinister side to Fairytales?
For my final project I intend to create a storybook based on the meanings of fairytales and mythology. When narrowing my ideas down I focused on tales that had affected my childhood most notably 'Snow White'. The stories are told to children, setting the seeds of good morals yet they are extremely dark and their psychology taps into the fundamentals of human relationships.
I took my initial inspiration from an essay called ‘Snow, Glass and Apples: The Story of Snow White’ by Terri Windling. She calls it a chilling tale or murderous rivalry, blood, witchcraft and cannibalism. Artistically I want to look at Paula Rego. I will look at ’nursery rhymes’ in particular. Rego’s work has also been looked at by Terri Windling so it will be interesting to compare. I also intend to look at Hockney’s take on fairy tales and Cindy Sherman’s ‘fairy tale disasters’.
I know I want to paint my final idea but I still want to explore other media. I want to try and find the right tone for my work, the right colours to create an atmosphere. I will do that by using different techniques like printing and using Photoshop. They can both create quick results so I am able to do many tests. I will have to experiment as my project goes on and as its required. I will have to experiment with colour mixing and scale and composition as my paintings need it.
To evaluate my work I will do as I usually evaluate a project first. I will assess the strengths and weaknesses of my work and see what I can do better next time. As well as this I will annotate my work as I go along to make sure I am on the right track. I will get the opinions of others as to how my work goes and whether it sends the right messages or entirely different ones.
Week one and two- research
Week three and four- experimentation
Week five and six- final idea and evaluation
on another note i hope you liked the influx of art. I had an interview at manchester met today so i had the opportunity to photo my work and get it on here
